This page is pretty easy to follow and understand. One of the main issues here
is where exactly to use the ice cup when you are hurting. There are a couple
of rules of thumb to follow.
1) If the pain you are experiencing is in the 'belly' of the muscle, (i.e. your
quad, hamstring, calf, etc.), ice where the pain is and the entire surrounding
area.
2.) If the pain is in a joint icing the joint itself is going to do VERY LITTLE
to alleviate your pain. Find the area/muscle ABOVE where the joint is hurting
and ICE THERE! If you push into that area, (above the point of pain), you will
likely find that area to be very sore and tight. That muscle/tissue is pulling
on the joint and causing pain similar to what happens when you pull several
strands of the hair on your head. The hair, (muscle), is not hurting but the
scalp, (joint), is! You wouldn't take a pain killer or muscle relaxor for your
scalp in that case... You'd let go of your hair! Icing the area above the joint
will reduce, pain, swelling and inflammation in the joint. After icing the area
you can do some P&M Myofascial release
to the area yourself. This will further open up the tissue, and allow proper
blood flow and circulation to and from the injured area. If you are asking why
ice, not heat? Click
here to find out!
